Tucson has definitely
become a relocation destination. Tucson is so interesting because
it’s where modern life meets the old west. When you think of
Tucson, you can’t help but to think of cactus, desert, rugged
terrain, rodeo, and the old west. But today Tucson is a modern,
thriving, city with a solid plan for its future. Local government
and business leaders are working together to make Tucson a better
place to live, and it is working.
In the city of Tucson people are moving into Tucson at a very healthy rate. The population
grew 25% between 1990 and 2000, and last year alone it increased
another 2.3%.
A significant part of
the local economy is tourism. The area is rich in history, culture,
and natural beauty that along with a mild winter climate give it a
natural tourist draw. The Native Americans who pioneered the area
have left incredible gifts for all to enjoy. People from all over
the world come to see their rock art called “Petroglyphs.”
Another must see are some of the old Spanish Missions built so long
ago. Other things the tourists enjoy include the Titan Museum, the
Pima Air Museum, and an actual airplane graveyard.
Residents and tourists
alike can enjoy a hike in Sabina Canyon or sunbathing at Seven Falls
Trail. In February there is a world class gathering of Gem and
Mineral dealers and buyers. There you can see the most unbelievable
fossils, enormous crystals, opals, and even meteorites. In the
springtime you’ve got Major League Baseball’s spring
training camp that comes to town, which is an opportunity to get an
up-close and personal look at the stars of the game.
Tucson is also home to
the University of Arizona, which plays a vital role in the community.
It brings a lot to the local economy including jobs. It brings
intellectual resources including 4 libraries, multiple museums,
performing arts center, science laboratories, an observatory, and
much more to the area. It gives the local high school graduates a
chance to go to a major University without leaving home. It also
gives its students a chance to participate with local business
people. And, of course, it brings major sports and major sports’
revenues to the area. In short, it is an extremely valuable member
of the community.
Although a significant
part of the global planning for Tucson includes beautifying and
invigorating downtown, there is peripheral construction and
development happening. These well planned communities include a
balanced blend of residential homes, retail, and commercial
development, along with ample green space and bike trails. The vision
for Tucson is an uncongested, free-flowing existence.
Natural beauty adorns
the area, and there is so much to do. Whether you are into cultural
pursuits or athletics or a little of both, you will find what you
need here. Outdoor activities can be done year round in Tucson,
which is known for its big blue skies and mild winter temperatures.
Golfing, biking,
birding, camping, caving, rock climbing are all built into what’s
available in the immediately surrounding area. Bicycle Magazine has
noted that Tucson is the second best place to train for cyclists both
professional and amateur, and hence has developed quite a reputation
with that community.
Tucson school districts
rank very well. They offer each student an excellent educational
opportunity. For those who prefer, there are also a number of
private schools to attend on all grade levels. And for the
sup-achievers, there are a number of Magnet schools.
All things considered,
this is a wonderful place to start a new young family. It’s
also an affordable place to retire. Prices compared to other Western
cities are still relatively modest. The median value of an owner
occupied home is just $195,000. The cost of living here is
modest. In general terms it is about 33% less than San Diego, Los
Angeles, or San Francisco. It is on par with cities like Albuquerque
or Austin. The median household income is just over $36,000 per year.
